I want information about further training or postgraduate study How will you benefit from further study or
training?
Do you know what you are looking for - and why?
- Is a postgraduate degree/diploma required for your field? If so,
what
specific programme is required? Research all possible programmes.
Talk
to students who have already completed the course and find out about the
jobs they are now doing. University Careers Services and course leaders
will have details - see Graduate Case Studies on the Prospects
website
- Are you studying to advance your career? If so, what exactly do you need?
Is a degree/diploma required or can you just do additional training in a specific area? A postgraduate
degree is a big investment in time and money - do you really want to do
it if it isn't necessary? Perhaps you love your field of study and you'd
simply like to learn more regardless whether another qualification is needed. Think about whether you want to commit
to a degree programme or take an adult education course instead.
- Are you looking at postgraduate programmes because you want to change
career direction? Before looking at course prospectuses, take the time
to do some self-assessment and career exploration. You don't want to finish
a postgraduate course and then find you don't like that field either!

- Are you planning to study just to delay having to think about a career? With
some Masters and diploma courses, you will be applying for jobs as you
begin the course, so you need to have your career plan in place. If you
don't think through your plans, you might end up investing a lot of
time and money in doing a course that you hate. See
I haven't decided what is the right career for me for ways of
finding out more about what might suit you.
- Does the course fit in with your short-term and long-term career plans?
Revisit the action plan that you made and see whether this job fits the
criteria or maybe the plan is due for revision. If you don't have a plan,
