Referees
- As a final year student, you were probably advised to list two referees,
one work related, one academic related. If you've been working for a year
or more, your lecturers might not remember you as clearly and a
potential employer is probably more interested in hearing from someone who
knows you in a work environment
- If you don't want your current employer to know that you're job-hunting, it's best to
say "References available upon request" on your CV instead of giving
names. That way you control who is contacted for a reference and
when. In most cases it's better not to tell anyone in your
current job that you're looking elsewhere. If you tell your
supervisor that you're jobhunting, and it takes several months to find
something, you might get cut out of important projects or
assignments. If you're not going to tell your supervisor then
don't tell anyone - word gets around!
- When the time comes to give a potential employer the names of your
referees, be sure to ask the referees first
- Your referees will find it helpful if you let them know who will be
contacting them and if you tell them about the job you're going for
and the things that you'd like them to emphasise. You could also
give your referees a copy of your CV to remind them of
your background and experience.
